Easy Halloween Decor Idea

When I used to travel for work, I collected a few fun items that I could use to quickly give my house a particular holiday vibe. Since then, I still keep a small stash of items that I can quickly use to decorate my house with little effort.

One of my Halloween decor favorites is this “Witch Spells” book. Ok so I love books anyway but this is a repurposed one with the title painted on the front. So easy to pull it out of storage and plop it down where I can see it.

The stuffed black cat was a gift from a friend years ago, and I have a framed Halloween postcard over the bookcase I use for storage next to the front door. Yes, the bookcase is slated for a refinishing job soon, the size was more important to get right first because the space is small.

Besides not needing a lot of storage space, keeping holiday decorations small makes it easy to enjoy the holidays without dreading the clean up. Boo!

Halloween Welcome

If you have a small space you walk by or see frequently, this Halloween Welcome vignette is a fun way to bring in the spooky season without having to store huge decor items. And you can easily transition to the next celebration with similar small items.

This is a two-shelf book case with a mirror I use at the front door as a miniature mudroom. It holds my gardening hat, gardening shoes and gloves, a couple of blankets, fish food and an extra set of socks or two. On the top shelf I like to have a small bouquet of fresh flowers and something seasonal such as this Halloween Welcome vignette.

The ceramic mouse is an old salt shaker I found in a yard sale box for $1 when I purchased clay flower vases. Makes me smile every time I bring it out of its storage shoe box.

The vintage post card is a print from something I found online, and the photo frame was a thrift store purchase also for $1. The spider is plastic and a gift, it usually spends its time outside on my front porch next to my seating bench. The little pumpkin is made out of chenille fabric and serves me well for Halloween and Thanksgiving.

You can certainly go bigger, which I have done in the past but I find these small items have been the most sustainable for easy home decor over the years.

When through, I tuck them back in a shoebox and bring out the next small seasonal decor, a nice way to mark the passage of time and to have something fun to welcome you as you walk by. As we all spend more time at home, get the kids involved in making the inspirational collection with things they already have; it doesn’t have to be new things you buy.

Mum House Witch

I love to see how people decorate for Halloween and to pick up ideas in case I have a wave of energy to do something for next year. By far, my favorite Halloween home decor inspiration is this house where I live in mid-Missouri.

First, the mums are beautiful, what a wonder garden sampler of colors and varieties, and they make quite a first impression as one drives by.  So much fall color on the ground as surrounding trees start to change color, too.

I don't have flower beds where I can do this but I am inspired by the visitor to the mums - see the witch legs sticking up out of the orange mum to the right of the wall with the address number on it?

Look at the orange mum in a metal container to the right of the front door. See the legs?

So clever to add the two legs with telltale witch shoes in an orange mum in a metal container in the back. Those legs look easy to make, too. I'm thinking this same idea could be applied for Christmas decorating, too, only with elf legs.

Maybe on a snowy day this winter I will be inspired. Wouldn't this also make a cute housewarming gift?
