Precious Memories Baby Crib Handmade Quilt Gift Set

One of Missouri’s successful gift companies is the Precious Memories collection of cards, figurines and other related collectibles started in 1978 by illustrator Sam J. Butcher. His signature illustrations feature teardrop eye characters with sweet positive sentiments now recognized worldwide.

What began as gifts for friends expanded into an extensive line of collectibles with the help of Enesco Company, which made the Precious Moment figurine we added to this one of a kind, made in USA Precious Moment Baby Crib Quilt Gift set.

The approximately 5-inch pre-loved porcelain figures are standing on either side of a tree trunk with two bluebirds perched on top. “I love you” is carved in the center of the tree trunk. The Enesco #-3116 figurine is called “Thee I Love” A Girl and Boy Standing Around A Tree and the value of the collectible figurine ranges from $20-$60.

I wasn’t concerned about the value, I just liked the little bluebirds on top and was happy to find something to keep our Precious Moments Baby Crib quilt company.

Custom Wedding Dress Baby Quilt

Over the years we have made a number of these custom wedding dress quilts, some as baby quilts and others as lap quilts. There is something quite appealing about repurposing such a special dress. What other uses can one really have for a wedding dress?

There are some interesting challenges with making custom wedding dress quilts. In the case of a custom wedding dress baby quilt, we had to stabilize lace to ensure that it will have a long life as part of this custom wedding dress baby quilt.

The customer wanted the standard 36 inches by 48 inch crib based on our custom wedding dress lap quilt throw design so we made the square quilt blocks smaller to fit the final size.

We were also asked to incorporate lace, which meant the machine quilting had to work around the lace but still tack it.

Delicate lace is stabilized for a long life. (Photo by Charlotte Ekker Wiggins)

Our original custom wedding dress quilt design included a machine quilting design along the borders that added a third dimension to these custom handmade quilts. The machine quilting was a little smaller to reflect the smaller overall custom handmade quilt design.

Machine quilting around the edge adds another dimension. (Photo by Charlotte Ekker Wiggins)

The customer wanted something soft for the backing and provided a very slippery soft quilt backing fabric. Our excellent machine quilter was able to work with the backing and get it incorporated. The end result was a heavy weight baby quilt that repurposes a special piece of clothing to mark the next life chapter, the birth of a child.

This is not a custom baby quilt that can get daily use. We recommend dry cleaning and using this for special occasions like a baptism, continuing the tradition of marking life’s special moments.

We love to hear from our customers, especially when they are sharing the arrival of two more grandchildren.

In this case, the families are located on either coast so we custom embroidered the same pattern of quilt in different colors. Our zoo baby crib quilts are popular gifts we can easily customize by adding a baby rattle that compliments the baby quilt.

Story Book Baby Quilts

As we settle into a disquieting time navigating COVID 19, there’s been an increase in the number of prominent people reading children’s books. Reading is an excellent way to help children develop language skills. Studies show that parents who read to their children significantly increase the child’s learning.

As a big sister and step mother, I can personally attest to the sheer joy of reading out loud. It’s not only helpful but creates a wonderful bond between the reader and the listeners. To this day my brothers can share a word that summarizes our experience growing up reading books to each other.

It was this moment in time that inspired me to make several custom story book baby quilts. Each baby quilt is unique using printed panels out of favorite vintage story books.

The first one features charming Mother Goose Baby Quilt nursery rhyme illustrations, a perfect first baby quilt for the newborn.

I left a center square where the baby quilt can easily be personalized and added a cute as a button toy rabbit. The rabbit looks like it could have stepped out of one of the baby quilt panels!

Children tend to learn by focusing on first words, which inspired some of our other custom baby quilts.

Our custom Zoo Baby Quilt features favorite animals and their associated words.

Another center panel is available to easily make this a custom personalized quilt.

This baby quilt would also make a great quilted wall hanging in a nursery and something a parent could use to make up their own stories based around an animal.

For the older reader, this custom Poky Puppy rag quilt has the Poky Puppy story in quilt panels, so no book required.

There’s a panel top left where the baby quilt can be personalized with custom embroidery, much as names are written into books.

These custom personalized baby quilts will keep the listener warm and make it easy for both reader and listener to follow along.

And fall asleep, right then and there.

Hunny Buzz Baby Quilt on Its Way!

There are a number of steps to make a custom baby quilt, from picking the design, then the fabrics, how we plan to finish it and what toy will keep it company as it waits to warm a small one. One of my personal favorite steps is hand sewing the tag on the baby quilt. I don’t do it until the baby quilt has been purchased and is ready to be shipped.

Oh, we could sew the tags in the process of making the baby quilt. There is something very - well, personal - about hand sewing on the label. It gives me time to remember all of the work that went into making the custom baby quilt and to wonder about the new baby that will make this a favorite childhood friend.

I have a soft spot for this particular baby quilt I called Hunny Buzz Baby Quilt. In addition to featuring some of my brothers’ favorite childhood characters, it includes some of mine, from birds, snails and caterpillars. It also has some of my adult favorites, can you guess which ones those are?

Tigger is ready to keep this charming baby quilt company! (Photo by Charlotte Ekker Wiggins)

The custom baby quilt name gives it away, Hunny and Bees.

As a special treat, this custom Hunny Buzz baby quilt has a patterned backing with the same characters, making this custom baby quilt reversible.

And how can I forget a special mention of the bouncy Tigger toy that travelled with the custom baby quilt? Ok, so picking out the toys to match the baby quilts is my second best favorite thing to do, I really enjoyed matching Tigger up to this baby quilt.

So as Winnie the Pooh says, “Home is the comfiest place to be.”

Lewe the Ewe Baby Quilt

Lewe the Ewe Handmade Baby Quilt

When I spend an afternoon at our local quilt guild’s bi-annual show, it is always intriguing to me what handmade quilts first catch my eye, and interest.

The Piece and Plenty Quilt Guild has a robust group of quilters who hold a show every other year. i can usually remember favorites from past shows, some which draw me just as much as new ones.

Lewe the Ewe Custom Handmade Baby Quilt certainly caught my eye. That ewe is happy, just look at the smile on its face. What caught my eye, though, was the fleece texture made out of chenille.

Looking at it closely you can better see how the chenille was added. What other fabrics do you think could have been used to add texture?

Chenille adds a third dimension to Lewe the Ewe Baby Quilt. (Photo by Charlotte Ekker Wiggins)

The very detailed machine quilting also nicely added dimension. This would make an excellent wall hanging in a nursery and reminded me of one of my favorite sheep-themed baby quilts, One Sheep Two Sheep Baby Quilt. Our baby quilt also has the same raised, three-dimension to the sheep, which invites one to pet them.

Every handmade quilt has a story and this is Lewe the Ewe’s story:

One secret to easily making baby quilts, starting with a panel. (Photo by Charlotte Ekker Wiggins)

And how can I pass up saying something about Lewe’s yellow friend and flowers. I have to confess, any bees also tend to catch my eye.

The bee and flowers add a happy note. (Photo by Charlotte Ekker Wiggins)

So many custom baby quilts I see these days start as pre-printed panels that can then be embellished to taste. Sometimes I see the same panel at craft shows sometimes side by side and that helps to highlight the creativity of the quilt maker. No two look exactly the same!

Pink Large Blocks Handmade Quilt

Sometimes it’s very easy to fall in love with fabrics, which is what inspired us to make this one of a kind Pink Large Blocks Handmade Quilt.

Following the design of our custom baby rag quilts, Pink Large Blocks Handmade Quilt is a handmade custom one of a king lap quilt throw size 50x60 inches, a good size for that small child to grow into and still have a baby quilt around.

The handmade quilt has a variety of all cotton flannel multi-patterned designs, which sometimes get lost in smaller block sizes. The patterns are easy to see in these larger custom quilt blocks, which are finished with hand cut ragged edges.

The all cotton flannel was washed before cut into quilt blocks to ensure the quilt blocks are soft to the touch.

Each handmade flannel baby quilt block is sewn at a diagonal to keep the cotton flannel rugged over the years.

A little white lamb toy, also soft to the touch with a matching pink nose.

Oh. And a matching pink bow.

But it really was the pink nose.

Dick and Jane Handmade Baby Quilt

If you were learning to read in the 1930s through the 1960s, the Dick and Jane books were part of your reading list.

According to Wikipedia, Dick and Jane are the main characters in popular readers written by William S. Gray and Zerna Sharp. The main characters, Dick and Jane, were a little boy and girl. Supporting characters included Baby (or Sally), Mother, Father, Spot (originally a cat in the 1930s, but a dog in later editions), Puff the cat, and Tim the teddy bear. They first appeared in the Elson-Gray Readers used in the 1930s, which themselves were heavily revised and enlarged editions of the Elson Readers originally produced by William H. Elson in the 1920s.

The simple but distinctive illustrations for the books were done by artists Eleanor Campbell and Keith Ward. Robert Childress  did the 1950s illustrations, which are the ones featured in this Dick and Jane baby crib quilt printed fabric panel.

Dick and Jane Baby Crib Quilt has lightweight and sustainable bamboo for filling, making this a lightweight and warm baby quilt.

To personalize, it would be easiest to add an embroidered patch sewn on the back. Another option would be to select a block and add custom embroidery under the Dick and Jane Baby Crib Quilt block.

I can just see a beginning reader curling up with Dick and Jane baby crib quilt and reading along with the sentences on the back!

Personalized Pastel ABC Baby Quilt

I am using this Pastel ABC handmade baby quilt as an example; the principles are the same, which is how to make a handmade quilt personal.

For baby quilts, the easiest way to make a handmade baby quilt personal is to add custom embroidery. There are several combinations possible, the most popular being the baby’s first and middle name, then the birth date.

Some customers also chose to add just a first name, others add the first and last names, and then some have added first, middle and last name.

If you don’t have enough time to get custom embroidery, which can take a couple of weeks, then chose a complimentary toy. The best toy is a baby rattle in complimentary colors to the handmade baby quilt.

If you have access to a family photo, a nice way to personalize this handmade baby quilt would be to add a framed family photo.

To make sure our customers have the information they need, each customer gets a personalized quilt care guide outlining how to wash, dry and store the handmade baby quilt. The name, size and type of handmade quilt is listed on the back of the card.

How do you personalize your handmade quilts?

Custom Alphabet Handmade Quilt

Custom Alphabet Handmade Quilt

There is no doubt I like alphabet quilts for baby gifts. Not only can they be used in a crib but they can be wonderful wall hangings, easily changing a room into a nursery. The alphabet is also one of the first things kids learn and here it is, easy to refer to and a special part of a child’s early days.

There’s quite a story behind this handmade quilt, starting with what the original intent was with ceramic buttons. You don’t see many on this custom alphabet handmade quilt, which is a story of flexibility and still completing one’s custom quilt design idea.

I was just thinking where would someone even find ceramic buttons these days. I can remember picking some up years ago when my mother would make some of our clothes. The ceramic buttons then where the only “cute” buttons then on the market.

Today there are a variety of plastic buttons with cute themes, much lighter to sew onto clothes.

Each custom alphabet handmade quilt block had cute pre-made appliques, at first it was hard to decide which one to feature. Then I settled on some of my personal favorites - butterflies, bees and bluebirds.

If you can’t make a custom alphabet handmade quilt, you can do something similar with an already-made alphabet quilt like Alphabet in Clouds Baby Quilt. The baby quilt is finished, all you have to do is go shopping for the pre-made appliques. Have fun!

Beatrix Potter Baby Alphabet Quilt Gift Set

Do you recognize these characters? These are part of my childhood memories, illustrations of animals in a garden by Beatrix Potter.

According to Wikipedia, Helen Beatrix Potter (11866 – 1943) “was an English writer, illustrator, conservationist and natural scientist  best known for her children's books featuring animals.

Born into an upper-class household, Potter was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets and spent holidays in Scotland, developing a love of landscape, flora, and fauna, all of which she closely observed and painted.

Though Potter was typical of women of her generation in having limited opportunities for higher education, her study and watercolours of fungi led to her being widely respected in the field of mycology. In her thirties, Potter self-published the highly successful children's book The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Following this, Potter began writing and illustrating children's books full-time.”

My grandmother introduced me to Potter books. Although I couldn’t read English at the time, I thoroughly enjoyed the illustrations and made up my own stories about the characters illustrated in the books.

This brand new, made in USA Beatrix Potter Baby Alphabet Quilt celebrates the Potter animals through the letters of the alphabet.

To turn this into a gift set, we added a Wedgwood plate featuring Mama Rabbit feeding a sick Peter, a great addition to a nursery wall.

Back to the baby quilt, which features printed panels of Potter’s wonderful illustrations. The quilt blocks are pages from her alphabet book, including the front page of the book.

Pink Large Rag Blocks Baby Quilt

Flannel rag quilts have been a customer favorite for baby showers, baby gifts and nursery decor. As we were developing the baby quilt designs, we made another larger one to see how it would turn out. Pink Large Rag Blocks Baby Quilt is for that little girl who has outgrown her crib and moved to a big girl bed but still wants a favorite blanket to keep her company.

To entertain her, we picked soft cotton flannel fabrics with interesting designs that compliment that pink color. There are baby quilt blocks with purple flowers, a favorite of several little girls I knew who loved purple as they grew up. Another popular topic is featured in another baby quilt block, butterflies.

Not to be forgotten, we also have pink flannel baby quilt blocks with bears, although this gift set has a huggable lamb as the toy instead of a bear.

These cotton flannel baby quilts are easy to wash in cold water and dry on cool. The fabrics were pre-washed before we made the baby quilts so any shrinkage of the cotton fabrics should already have taken place.

Can you think of someone who would enjoy this baby gift set?

Maybe we should call it a big girl now gift set!

Pooh Adventure Baby Quilt Gift Set Inspiration

There is a new Winnie ther Pooh movie with Christopher Robin as a middle aged adult about to lose his family because of his work. And yes, the "ther" is the correct reference.

The reviews mention that adults we forget our childhood friends but I am here to say that's not true. I still have my Squeaker Bear and Panda and Bun-Bun Rabbit toys, reminders of earlier days and friends who will always be with me. That was the inspiration for Pooh Adventure Baby Quilt Gift Set

The baby quilt itself was made into a regular lap quilt throw size because baby-themed quilts are hard to find. The larger 50x60 inch size makes this baby quilt appropriate for the older youngsters on your gift list and can easily be something a baby can enjoy as it grows into a toddler.

Pooh Adventure baby quilt can also be easily used as a nursery or room wall hanging.

The bright colors mean the baby quilt will stand up to a lot of washing without fading as quickly as pastel colors do, and the Winnie the Pooh rattle toy is bound to delight any child. It even makes me smile every time I pick it up.

There's also another benefit to this baby quilt, you can easily personalize it by adding someone's name in the "this book belongs to" quilt square. Either custom embroidery or an indelible ink pen will do the trick.

And did I mention this is actually a book? What fun to read the different sections.

My mother and I used to make and sell Pooh Bear toys. I still have one of them keeping me company in my office, complete with the "Hunny" jars I used to make out of styrofoam balls covered in paper mache. Once dry, I would paint them by hand.

Who would have ever suspected then that someday I would actually have bees and real honey.

To make this easy care, it's also machine quilted with a floral design.

Fun with Bears Quilt Wall Hanging Gift Set

Finally found the right bear to go with Beary Fun Throw Quilt Wall Hanging.

Finally found the right bear to go with Beary Fun Throw Quilt Wall Hanging.

Fun with Bears Quilt Wall Hanging

Over the years, customers have shared lovely notes about how much they appreciate the gift sets we offer. Those notes inspire me to make sure the toys we offer nicely match the handmade quilts.

This charming Beary Fun Throw Quilt with applique bears was a bit of a challenge. The bears are made out of fabric, which I wasn't able to find in my stash of toys so I set the throw aside until I could find just the right complimentary toy.

This applique bear was the inspiration for the bear I finally found for the gift set.

This applique bear was the inspiration for the bear I finally found for the gift set.

When the next shipment of toys came in, this little bear appeared, and I kept pulling it out of the box and looking at it.

Why did this bear ring a bell, I kept thinking.

One day I took it into the storage closet and there it was, the perfect throw to go with the bear, and vice versa.

See how much this bear looks like the one in the quilt? Fun!

Now you don't have to do the shopping, all you have to do is tell us what you embroidered on the bear quilt and want you want written on the gift card.

How easy is that?

One way to customize a quilt is to add either a handmade doll or a complimentary one made by someone else. A toy will work well, too, that's why we offer a free toy to carry the gift card in our custom baby crib quilt gift sets.

This is a modern take on a favorite vintage design. Raggedy ABCs Baby Crib Quilt features printed blocks of the letters of the alphabet with a Raggedy Ann and Andy theme. The bright solid red fabric compliments the blocks.

A large solid red space in the center is perfect for adding custom personalized embroidery with someone's name, birth date and location.

This warm baby crib quilt with sustainable and renewable bamboo fill is finished with machine quilting for easy care. Wash in cold water; dry on cool setting.

The printed blocks have nice details, such as figures of alphabet letters.

The two handmade dolls can also be secured to the center of the baby crib quilt for a charming wall hanging in a new nursery.

This made in Missouri, USA baby crib quilt's  bamboo filling makes this baby crib quilt lightweight but as warm as traditional cotton. Bamboo is sustainable and renewable without the heavy doses of pesticides needed to raise cotton for the traditional cotton quilt batting.

Two 12-inch handmade rag dolls compliment the handmade baby crib quilt.

Noah's Ark Baby Crib Quilt

Primary colors make this charming Noah's Ark Baby Crib Quilt pop!

Primary colors make this charming Noah's Ark Baby Crib Quilt pop!

Noah's Ark Baby Crib Quilt

I know pastel colors are favorite for baby gifts but I recommend bright, primary colors for several reasons:

1. Studies show babies respond more to bright, primary colors.

2. A bright quilt will hold its colors longer through years of washing.

3. Bright quilts are easier to locate when they have been misplaced!

This brand new, charming Noah's Ark baby crib quilt is a printed cotton panel that has been finished with machine quilting for easy care. That means it will survive pulling, wrapping and hugging.

Speaking of hugging, I added a Mama Rabbit holding a baby rabbit as the free toy, seemed only appropriate for a quilt theme of two by twos, don't you think?

A good place to add custom embroidery is under the blue waves and over the XOs.

To easily personalize this one of a kind baby crib quilt, there are several spots where you can add custom embroidery. My suggestion would be under the blue waves in the white spot above the XOs.

This would also make a nice wall hanging to quickly turn a guest room or extra room into a nursery!

Baby Quilt Gift Set Surprise

Baby Quilt Gift Set Surprise

One of the things I enjoy doing when we finish making a handmade baby quilt is matching it to a gift toy or item to make it into a gift set. So many of our customers like to order and ship directly to a different address that having the gift sets featured and ready to ship makes it easier for customers to see exactly what they are ordering, and what their gift recipient will get on the other end.

The match also includes the actual handmade baby quilt that they are buying. Since many of our handmade baby quilts are custom, no two are exactly alike so we like our customers to see the exact handmade baby quilt they are purchasing.

Since so many of our thank you notes involve comments about the delight over the free toys, I take the matchmaking process quite seriously.

When matching up the handmade baby quilt with the free toy that delivers the gift tag, I try to take my cue from the fabrics in the baby quilt. There is a pink rag baby quilt with ducks so the gift toy I matched to the baby quilt is a cute baby toy duck, for example.

For this pink baby quilt gift set, in the original photo I had a purple bunny that complimented the baby quilt. When the handmade baby quilt was purchased, however, I remembered seeing another purple bunny that would be an even better match. Can you see why?

The toy bunny had wings to match the purple dragonflies on the handmade baby quilt!

When matched with the pink rag baby quilt with the purple and blue dragonflies, they looked like they were made for each other. They all looked perfect bundled together in the gift box, I smiled the whole way down to the post office.

It really is the simple things in life.
